KMUX is the National Weather Service radar at San Francisco / Mt. Umunhum. It’s the primary radar covering the Santa Cruz Mountains and Soquel. The view below loads the live radar loop directly from weather.gov.

Station Notes

Station ID: KCASOQUE98
Location: Soquel, CA (Santa Cruz County)
Network: Weather Underground Personal Weather Station network
Sensor: Ambient Weather station
Data: Temperature, humidity, pressure, rainfall, wind speed & direction

This station sits in the hills above Soquel in a coastal California microclimate — influenced by fog off Monterey Bay, marine layer patterns, and the Santa Cruz Mountain terrain. Readings here can differ significantly from coastal Santa Cruz or the San Jose valley floor, even on the same day.

Interpretation Context

Soquel sits in a transitional zone between the immediate coast and the mountains. A few patterns worth knowing when reading the data here:

  • Marine layer: Morning fog and low clouds are common spring through fall, burning off by midday. If the station reads high humidity and mild temps in the morning, that’s normal — not rain.
  • Temperature inversion: The hills can be warmer than the coast in the morning and cooler by afternoon. Don’t compare this station directly to Santa Cruz beachfront readings.
  • Winter rain: When KMUX shows strong returns over the mountains, this station is often in the precipitation. Watch the pressure trend — a sharp drop signals incoming systems.
  • Wind: Afternoon NW wind funnels through the Santa Cruz Mountains, picking up speed in gaps. Light winds here in the morning can be a 20+ mph afternoon northwest by 3 PM.
