Privacy

This is a personal archive of fieldwork, run by one person. It sells nothing here, has no accounts, no log-in, no newsletter, and no advertising. Here is what happens to information when you visit.

What the site itself keeps

Nothing personal. The web host keeps ordinary server logs (address, page requested, browser type, time) for a short period for security and error diagnosis, as every web host does. I do not combine them with anything else.

If you write to me through the contact page, what you send is used only to answer you. I keep that correspondence the way anyone keeps mail; I do not add you to any list.

Third parties that see a request when you read a page

  • Google Analytics 4 (Google LLC) — anonymous page-view statistics: which pages are read, roughly where from, on what kind of device. IP addresses are truncated by Google; I see counts, not people. You can block it with any content blocker or Google’s own opt-out add-on.
  • YouTube (Google LLC) — some pages show thumbnail images served from YouTube for videos on my channel; clicking one takes you to youtube.com, where Google’s privacy policy applies. No YouTube player is embedded on this site.
  • USGS — the earthquake pages load the public USGS earthquake catalog directly from earthquake.usgs.gov; no data about you is sent there beyond the ordinary web request.

Cookies

The only cookies set are Google Analytics’ measurement cookies described above. The site sets none of its own.

The seismograph and the store

The live seismograph data on this site is measurement of the ground, not of visitors. The Cyberzoic jewelry store lives on a separate site, cyberzoic.com, which is run on Shopify and has its own privacy policy and checkout.

Software that publishes to my own channel

“RockPile Seismo Uploader” is a private tool that publishes this station’s own earthquake recordings to my YouTube channel. It runs on my computer, acts only on my account, and collects no information from anyone else. It is listed here because Google requires a privacy policy for any application that uses its sign-in.
